English Language Skills and Academic Performance: A Comparison between Asian International and Domestic Nursing Students in Singapore
Abstract
This quantitative correlational research study aimed to investigate the relationship between perceived English academic language skills and academic performance of among Asian international and domestic nursing students. Data from 713 students from an institution of higher learning in Singapore was collected through a self-reported questionnaire. Statistical analyses of the results revealed that international students perceived difficulties in more English language skills compared to their domestic peers. Correlational analyses showed that English language difficulties affect cGPA scores. However, international students had a slightly higher mean cGPA compared to domestic students. The findings indicated that although English language difficulties can impact cGPAs, international students can perform well academically despite such difficulties.
